Oriental rugs have been used for thousands of years and bring color, warmth, culture and comfort to a home. Because these rugs can last for many years and be very valuable, caring for your rug can make your investment a treasured heirloom.
Although many carpets are called “Oriental” rugs, only the carpets woven in Asia, Iran, China, India, Russia, Turkey and Pakistan technically carry that label. Other rugs, such as Persian rugs, which are made in Iran, have many similarities in style and material as Oriental rugs.
Rugs are typically made of wool, and the fibers are dyed with natural dyes using plant materials and insects or with synthetic dyes. Because of the variety of material and dyes that may be used in Oriental and Persian rugs, it’s important to know how to keep them in good condition.
Most Frequent Problems with Your Rug
To help your rug last a long time, take some precautions to protect and preserve it. Most damage to Oriental rugs comes from:
- Water seeping from potted plants that are placed on top of the rug.
- Moth and carpet beetle larvae that settle into the rug and eat the fibers.
- Chewing and scratches from pets.
- Raking effect from a power brush on a vacuum cleaner that damages the fibers and rug fringes.
Check your rug for water, insect or pet damage on a regular basis, and frequently vacuum both sides of the rug thoroughly (without the power brush attachment) to keep your rug looking good.
Cleaning Your Oriental Rug
Although regular vacuuming can get rid of loose dirt, at some point, your rug will need a thorough cleaning. Experts say steaming a rug typically only cleans the surface but doesn’t get dirt that may be lodged deep down in the pile. Dry cleaning one of these rugs doesn’t help because although the solvents can remove the dirt, they can also dry out the rug.
Most hand made rugs are hand washed thoroughly to remove dirt and stains, but hand washing a rug involves completely submerging it in water, shampooing it on both sides, rinsing it and then letting it dry. Because many rugs are large and heavy, this is cumbersome to do, and the process can damage the rug fibers.
